Hedge Trimming

Hedge trimming is one of those jobs that looks straightforward but goes wrong in a few ways: cut too late in the season and you risk disturbing nesting birds, cut at the wrong angle and the hedge browns off, and with large leylandii or laurel, the volume of waste becomes a real problem.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, intentionally disturbing nesting birds is an offence. In practice, this means the main hedge trimming season in Scotland runs from late August through to the end of March. Some species can be safely trimmed outside this window, Alexander will advise based on your hedge, its species, and the time of year.

All clippings are removed from site. We use professional equipment suited to the hedge size and species, and work carefully to maintain clean lines without damaging the structure.

Turfing and Lawn Installation

A new lawn properly laid should last decades with basic care. The key is ground preparation: existing vegetation removed, soil broken up and graded, topsoil added where the existing soil is poor or compacted, levelled to within 10mm across the full area, and firmed before quality turf goes down.

We use turf from reputable Scottish suppliers. Turf laid in spring (March to May) or early autumn (August to October) establishes best in Scottish conditions, typically becoming fully usable within 4 to 6 weeks with correct watering.

Fencing Installation and Repair

Fencing failure usually comes down to one of two causes: posts set too shallow, or cheap gravel boards that rot from the bottom. Concrete posts set at the correct depth (600mm for standard ground, 900mm for exposed or windy sites) with treated gravel boards and quality panels will last 15 to 20 years without significant maintenance.

Pressure Washing
