Hard Landscaping

Hard landscaping covers the structural elements of a garden, patios, paths, driveways, walls, steps, and edging. These are long-term investments. The difference between a well-laid patio and a poorly-laid one becomes obvious within 12 to 18 months: slabs that have shifted, jointing that has failed, water pooling in the wrong places.

The foundation is what matters. Proper sub-base depth (typically 100 to 150mm of compacted type 1 aggregate beneath a mortar bed), correct drainage falls (a minimum 1 in 80 fall away from the house), and the right jointing material make the difference between a surface that lasts 20 years and one that needs lifting within 5.

Alexander uses quality materials throughout, Indian sandstone sourced from reputable suppliers, treated timber for any edging or structural elements, and concrete or mortar mixes appropriate to the application.

Soft Landscaping

Soft landscaping covers everything living, turf, lawn preparation, hedging, and planting. A new lawn properly prepared and laid in spring or autumn will establish and be fully usable within 6 to 8 weeks. The key is in the ground preparation: removing existing vegetation, adding topsoil where the existing soil is poor, levelling to within 10mm across the area, and firming before turf is laid.

We use quality turf from reputable Scottish suppliers, not the budget-rolled turf that looks good for a few weeks and thin out under normal wear.
